4 Ways Smart Entrepreneurs Stay Energised For Success
Burnout eats income for breakfast.
Top performers understand just how crucial wellbeing is to their productivity and decision making. Having consistent energy levels impacts the profitability and the growth of their business and this ripples out into many other key aspects of life too.
That’s why the most successful Entrepreneurs consciously integrate healthy lifestyle systems to optimize energy and productivity into their day. It’s a non negotiable habit that fuels greatness. That’s how important abundant energy is to them. (Check out Ramit Sethi’s productivity fundamentals for example.)
You can do the same. In my experience, it comes down to prioritizing 4 key areas in life. By committing to manageable but powerful changes in each aspect will help you maintain a high level of energy to perform at your very best.
Create your own morning routine
Everyone seems to be crazy about morning routines at the moment. Entrepreneurs want to know exactly what rituals to mimic to increase their performance and sales.
However, obsessing over exactly what Tim Ferriss or Gabby Bernstein do first thing won’t get you very far. Their exact formula isn’t a magic bullet that you can apply to your life for similar success.
The point is they dedicate time every day to habits that prime themselves for success.
Practicing an energising morning routine will fire up your body and mind and get you into your creative flow too.
1. Mindset (unlock your flow state)
Setting a positive intention every morning is the linchpin for the rest of your day. Tune in to how you are feeling and learn to cultivate awareness around your mental wellbeing. This will dramatically help you to manage stress and limit emotional exhaustion.
Stress is an energy zapping monster for entrepreneurs like you and me. You must have simple tools to focus your mind and manage your emotions as they arise.
Don’t let the negative storylines and self talk drain your energy for the rest of the day. Practice mindful self compassion and treat yourself with the care and respect you deserve. These methods are a pivotal step to reducing your mental fatigue.
Try one of these:
- Body Scan
- Mindful Breathing
- Journaling (Morning Pages)
- Gratitude Practice
- Self Compassion
- Loving kindness meditation
2. Move every day
Regular exercise is a very efficient way to boost your energy and metabolism. Aim for at least 20 mins in the morning. Make it something you enjoy and preferably outdoors for greater benefit.
- High Intensity Interval Training (Tabata)
- Strength Training
Tip: If you work out at a Gym, increase the likelihood of you following through by prepping your work out bag the night before.
3. Eat the right kind of fuel for your body
This is your foundation. You know the drill, a wide variety of whole foods, water and supplement regime is key. Keep the sugar and processed foods to an absolute minimum. Refined processed and sugary foods are your energy Kryptonite.
I highly recommend ditching the high caffeine energy drinks I see busy CEOs sipping too. They are full of artificial sweeteners which will give you headaches and damage your gut.
Nutritionally speaking, B Vitamins are your body’s go to energy micronutrient and it’s important to get enough of this crucial vitamin.
You can avoid deficiency by including foods high in vitamin B with each meal like organic vegetables, high-quality meats, nuts, seeds, and eggs. Finally, a daily B12 supplement is essential for Vegans.
4. Improve your Sleep quality
Your new energising routine means rolling out of bed a little earlier to give yourself enough time to enjoy your practice without rushing or missing an important part.
Optimising your sleep to guarantee you are suitably rested is your last step. Just like food and most other things, it’s about quality not quantity and you may not even need the recommended 8 hours if you stick to a diligent sleep hygiene routine like this (source).
- Enjoy caffeine before 2pm
- Give yourself permission to stop and just unwind
- Protect yourself from excessive blue light (f.lux app)
- Figure out your circadian rhythm and chronotype
- Switch off notifications and devices
- Make your bedroom dark (black our curtain and sleep mask)
- Sleep kit, pillow, eye mask accessories
- Regular supplement regime (Magnesium and D3)
How to switch off completely and rest
A common complaint I hear from my clients is that their mind suddenly gets very busy as soon as their head hits the pillow. This is very common.
If your thoughts are keeping you awake just use deep breathing and meditation techniques to calm your chattering monkey mind.
Personally, I find journaling before bed is a great way to settle my mind before sleep. It’s a way for me to reflect on the day and give myself permission to switch off from thinking about work.
I write down anything else that I might forget to do the next day which keeps me from playing it over and over in my mind. Try it, it keeps me sane!
Grab your journal and do a brain dump onto the page so you can switch off for the night. While you have your journal to hand write down 5 things you are grateful for today. Gratitude practice is a proven way to feel happier!
Tip: Try a sleep tracking app to measure your baseline and progress.
Don’t leave it all down to your willpower alone.
Committing to a schedule and system is key. Spend some time working out the logistics and figure out how you are going to make this energy boosting plan happen. Pick one area first that you think will be easiest to lock down and add on from there.
